ABACO PATHFINDERS --- SHENANDOAH UNIVERSITY –

L.C. HULL & CO.

A PARTNERSHIP IS BORN

Abaco Pathfinders Scholarship Foundation is announcing an exciting new approach to providing meaningful educational support to the young people of Abaco.  A partnership has been formed with Shenandoah University of Winchester, Virginia, whereby the school will pay a large portion of the total cost of their tuition through a work-study program.  Rhonda Hull, a Marsh Harbour attorney, has generously agreed to cover a large portion of the remaining expenses.  Pathfinders will also contribute financial support, however, the successful candidate will still have some costs, although minimal compared to the total yearly cost.  This will be a 4-year scholarship as long as the student continues to meet the academic requirements of the university.

Shenandoah is a private 4-year university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It has a student population of 2,500 and is located in the rural community of Winchester, Virginia, 70 miles from Washington, D.C.  It provides a broad liberal arts curriculum and its most popular majors are business, education and the health professions.  It is also known for its outstanding performing arts program. Graduate programs are also offered.

Pathfinders is presently providing tuition aid to 30 students from the Abacos and hopes to add another ten this coming year, however fundraising is always difficult.  It is hoped that this type of partnership between Pathfinders, colleges, and local businesses will expand and offer new opportunities for our young people.  Any residents that have influence with colleges around the world and any businessmen who are interested in helping sponsor a student are asked to contact Abaco Pathfinders' Administrator Kathy Weldon.

Samantha Major has been awarded the four year scholarship to Shenandoah University. This unique scholarship was facilitated by Dr. and Mrs. Jack Helm, residents of Winchester and second home owners on Elbow Cay. Miss Major, who is the daughter of Ms. Wanda MacKey of Hope Town, first graduated from Forest Heights Academy in 2003 and then attended high school in Ohio as an exchange student, taking college preparation courses. She will be majoring in biology at Shenandoah and then plans to enter a pre-medicine program.
