2006 Awardees Proud families and friends gathered to celebrate and honour Abaco Pathfinders’ new scholarship recipients July 2. The event was again hosted by the Abaco Beach Resort and attended by Pathfinder board member, Mr. Peter Sweeting, and his wife. Following opening remarks by Kathy Weldon and Michael Albury, the incoming chairman, Pathfinders’ new administrator, Cathy Meyers, presented the students with certificates of scholarship achievement. Each told the audience of their academic and professional plans. (Top row, left to right.) Justin Kemp has the honor of being the first to graduate from Every Child Counts with an academic/vocational diploma. He will be attending Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute in Nassau to train in refrigeration and air conditioning. Ovens Altidor will be attending Miami Dade Community College and hopes to eventually obtain a degree in international business. Ervin Joseph will continue to attend Miami-Dade and then transfer for his final years to study to become a vocational education teacher. (Bottom row, left to right.) Lanae Brown will to going to COB where she will be studying to become a math teacher. Kezia Etienne will now be attending Louisiana State University since she was recently awarded a full scholarship from Primetime. Pathfinders will provide funds for her books. She hopes to go into medicine. Brittany Benjamin, who was awarded a one-year scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic excellence, will be attending her sister’s alma mater, Florida Southern College to study medicine. is a junior at Nova Southeastern University and plans to become a physician’s
assistant. Unable to attend: Kateca Dawkins is currently attending Florida Metropolitan University, studying computer information science. Lathera Lightbourne is going to COB to study business management. Rebecca Russell is attending Western Kentucky University, seeking a degree in nursing. Wonsha Joseph will be going to Puerto Rico to attend Antellean Adventist University and study psychology. Jessica Higgs received a one-time scholarship for academic excellence. She will be a sophomore at Valdosta University and is studying for a career in medicine. These 12 students join the other 58 young people that Abaco Pathfinders has aided in continuing their education since 2001. |
