2003 Awardees

 


Abaco Pathfinders’ Scholarship Foundation is entering its third year of offering ten partial scholarships to assist students of Abaco who desire to continue their education after completing high school.  This year’s ten new recipients were chosen, as were the previous twenty, by a process of written application and then personal interview by the foundation’s scholarship committee.  These students were selected on the basis of their academic preparedness, motivation and investment in their own education, realistic goals and financial need. The foundation feels confident that these new scholarship winners will be as successful as the previous twenty, all of who continue to be in school and doing very well. Two, Jerome Menard and Kenneth Strachan, are graduating with bachelor degrees.

This year’s new scholarship winners are:

Renardo Curry graduated from Success Training College in Nassau in 1999 where he obtained an Associate of Science degree in  accounting management. Mr. Curry also attended Palm Beach Atlantic College.  He has been working as the manager of Sea Horse Boat Rentals in Marsh Harbour for the last three years, saving his money so he could continue his education.  He has been accepted at Florida Metropolitan University in Ft. Lauderdale, but he is also looking at other colleges.

Hilary Rutter will graduate from Abaco Central High School, where she is Head Girl, this year.  She is the daughter of Geoffrey Rutter and Edith Sims of Marsh Harbour.  Hilary intends to pursue her studies in law and accounting in England.

Bianca Bethel, of Marsh Harbour, is currently in her first year at Florida Southern College where she maintains a 4.0 grade point average. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Will Bethel. A graduate of Forest Heights Academy, she intends to pursue a degree in physical therapy.

Shamika White, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley White of Sandy Point, graduated from Abaco Central High School last year.  She is presently attending Florida Memorial College where her studies will be in pre-law.  She plans to eventually concentrate her studies in the area of family law.

Sandra Pinder, the daughter of Fernande Pinder of Hope Town, is a 2002 graduate of  Long Bay All Age School.  After working five years as a waitress, she and her mother saved the money for Sandra to attend Florida Memorial College in Miami where she is finishing her first semester this June.

Barnard Curry, of Cedar Harbour, will graduate from S. C. Bootle High School, where he is Head Boy.   He is the son of Wilfred and Edna Curry.  Barnard plans on attending The College of the Bahamas this coming September where he will major in business management and accounting.

Patricia Gerard will graduate this year from Abaco Central High School after having to leave school for two years to care for her ailing mother and her three brothers.  She has worked as a waitress at Mangoes since 1999, saving money for school.  She hopes to combine her interest in missionary work and nursing and plans to attend Broward Community College in Ft. Lauderdale.

Racquel Smith will graduate from Abaco Central High School this year.  While at Abaco Central, she won an island wide essay contest two years in succession.  She has an interest in teaching and plans to major in accounting and music. Raquel plans to attend either The College of the Bahamas or Florida Southern College. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ricardo Smith of Marsh Harbour.

Tavia Cornish, the daughter of Mrs. Marguerita Cornish of Dundas Town, is a 2001 graduate of Abaco Central High School. She is currently attending The College of the Bahamas in Nassau where she is majoring in primary education.  She hopes to return to the Abacos and teach here.

Michelle Sawyer, (not pictured), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Sawyer of Green Turtle, is a graduate of Forest Heights Academy and Palm Beach Community College.  She will be attending the University of Central Florida where she will continue her studies in speech pathology.  She plans to return and use her skills to help to help children in the Abacos.
